MEN OF ALL TRADES

Come and visit the training centre of the National Stud, the harness room, the forge or the horses running free in the paddocks!  This varied horse world beckons you in, from the dizzy smell of leather to the sound of the forge, from an exceptional equestrian lesson to the horses prancing in the pastures of “Le Pin” estate, providing a wonderful concentration of expertise, on show just for you!

• Visit to the National Stud institution’s training centre:

The professional National Stud training school was created in the 19th Century for the purpose of training officers of the National Stud.  It has since developed into the National Stud institution’s training centre, proposing various courses to students and professionals alike, each one leading to a recognised qualification, notably in the area of breeding techniques (e.g. artificial insemination, ultrasound, transfer of embryos, etc.) or in that of rearing horses (e.g. foaling, feed and rations, pasture management), not forgetting the equestrian techniques (driving, starting and training young horses. etc.) and the traditional trades of the equine sector (harness-maker, farrier, amongst others).

Open to visit from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays 4th & 11th July, 22nd & 29th August ; on Saturdays 23th & 30th July, 6th, 13th & 20th August.

• Visit to the forge:

A true auxiliary to the veterinarian, the farrier is able to make a horseshoe out of a strip of metal and to nail it to the horse’s hoof with his usual care and expertise.  This shoe serves to protect the hoof, enabling the horse to work out and develop its qualities depending on the use of the breed, from the aluminium shoe for racehorses to the grooved shoe for show jumpers (sport horse).

Open to visit from 2.30 to 4.30 p.m. on Mondays 18th & 25th July and 1st, 8th August ; on Tuesdays 5th & 12th July and 23rd & 30th August ; on Wednesday 17th August.

• Visit to the paddocks with the horses running free:

A paddock describes a small field for horses, often surrounded by protective post and railing fencing made of wood, as opposed to concrete or metal on which these magnificent beasts may injure themselves.
The paddocks on “Le Pin” estate constitute the real picture of Normandy, its lands marked by the horse across a countryside of vales and woodland.  Here we can admire the stallions and the horses in livery, essentially mares (sometimes with foal at foot) during the breeding season, which come to the “Le Pin” to be served by the stallions standing at stud.

Open to visit from 3 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday from 6th July through to 31st August (except this week in August, it will be on Monday 15th August)

• Visit to the harness room:

How to make a saddle or a harness for a carriage horse?  Working the leather necessitates the use of noble tools having such suggestive names as the round knife or the padding stick, amongst others.  Inside his atelier, oozing in that unforgettable leather smell and the traditional atmosphere of a craft that continues on for the best in the horse world, you will gain a brief insight into the harness-maker’s expertise and his knowledge of the horse.

Open to visit from 3 to 5 p.m. every Friday from 1st July through to 26th August.    Individuals or Groups*
Entry fee: €2,50 per adult     €2 per student/child.
